It is one of the most ancient of Etruscan cities. It is famous for the Etruscan necropolises, with some 6,000 tombs, 200 of which include wall paintings and remains of the so-called Ara della Regina temple dating to c. 4th-3rd century BC.

It is the capital of Italy. Its history spans more than two and a half thousand years. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at only around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe. Monuments and museums and the Colosseum are among the world's most visited tourist destinations receiving millions of tourists a year.
