It is a town and major ferry port. It faces France across the strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel. The surrounding chalk cliffs are known as the White Cliffs of Dover.

The Castle

From 1462 to 1539, it was the seat of the Boleyn family. Anne Boleyn, the second Queen Consort of King Henry VIII of England, spent her early youth there.
